Is your system sluggish or running slow? The solution may be to resize.
DDI System offers a file resizing service that ensures your system reaches its full processing potential and guards against file corruption and data loss. Though optional, this service is strongly recommended annually.
Let a Customer Care Database Expert analyze and resize your files to improve the overall performance and structural integrity of your data system. To get started now, submit a case. To learn more, read on...
What is resizing and why might I need it?
Inform data is stored in a database.
Think of this database as a desk drawer that has room to spare. Over time, you keep adding "stuff" to the drawer. Eventually, the drawer doesn't close properly or maybe even gets stuck. So you yank the drawer open and reorganize the contents: Maybe you collect all like items using drawer organizers, or you compress all your rubber bands into a smaller box. With proper planning and organization, all of the contents fit in your drawer while allowing it to open and close smoothly again.
In Inform, the "stuff" you add is your data–invoices, orders, and sales history. At implementation time, we configure your data files to operate optimally with room to grow. Over time, we allow the data files to automatically grow beyond the configured space, but this growth risks performance.
Whereas your stuffed drawer catches, your database performance suffers excessive disk I/O as the system reads and writes data from scattered overflow records. The longer a single file operation takes, the greater the risk of collisions on database locks and system downtime. These bottlenecks result in a potential gridlock for all files in the system (the drawer is stuck).
Eventually, you will have to optimize your database, the same way you need to organize that stuffed drawer. Optimization redistributes records in a larger file, correctly placing the records into the files primary space. This reorganization gets your system running smoothly again.
Note that database resizing is not the same as routine Windows Server maintenance. This process is required in addition to any other server maintenance processes you run.
How do I know if I need my files resized?
DDI System recommends at least one file resizing per year for all DDI System clients. This service is part of general system maintenance and housekeeping.
What are some of the benefits of resizing?
- Improved processing time
- Optimized search performance for Customer, Vendor and Product searches
- Reduced load times for features like the Order Pad, Customer Sales History, Forecasted Purchasing, KPI Dashboards and Pivot Tables
- Prevents file corruption by making all the files in the database contiguous rather than linked across the hard drive in different sectors of the disk, which can result in lost data
- Clears up all unused database space and gives you more available space for file storage
How long will it take to complete the resizing?
The time varies from 6-12 hours on average, depending on the size of your database. For this reason, we will analyze and resize your files after business hours, or over the weekend. The process will improve overall system performance and prevent data access gridlock that can harm the structural integrity of your business information.
